I never even heard of Mike Dece. Interesting. I'm glad SGP album was all solo cuts.

Curry drops a miss my homies song dedicated to not wanting to twit beef with Proper Boys. Spaceghostpurp got real quiet for once. He supposedly booted Dece for not "fitting in with what a Raider is".

Raider Klan is falling apart on twitter this weekend.

Yeah I realized that right after I listed him. And apparently the not "fitting in with what a raider" wasn't talking about his music. I guess he did some foul shit or got into some type of trouble that purp couldn't cosign. Denzel is still a raider though.

he uses his regular voice ("cup fulla beetlejuice" style). i like his screwed slurred vocals ("serious shit", or even "radiation", "polo right") better.

Anybody got a link for Denzel Currys Loyalty and Betrayal? The video got made private today but that beat is so ridiculous.

Not sure if this guy is technically in Raider Klan, but he's from MIA and has SGP's backing and shouts them out on one video. Anyway, seems to me like he's got real potential:

i like the writeup but i think your logic gets a little tangled when you talk about the nostalgia thing.

seems like you could've just simplified it to 'yes a lot of this sounds throwback-ish but just saying they do 90s memphis karaoke is too simplistic because they draw on several regions and periods at once and that's what separates their approach from the rest who just pick one regional/temporal niche and try to replicate it'. no need for the strawman argument of 'this is what 21st century nostalgia rap is and they're not that'. it confuses things and you're making sweeping generalizations that may not hold up to closer inspection.

or something like that

but don't get me wrong i'm not knocking you, you make tons of valid points and just the overall scope of this undertaking is impressive. especially since so much of their shit starts to run together after a while

I hear you. I was attempting to tackle what I think is an entirely unique approach to nostalgic rap, but I do hear you on the creation of the buckets. Probably not the best approach there. I may rethink that a bit and do a slight edit. Although I don't think your suggestion quiet captures my point.

oh i know that blurb was very simplistic, it was more of an example than a serious revision. what you wrote def has more nuance, it just gets muddled by the tangent about nostalgia categories.

Yeah. I think that's a sound criticism.

i'm curious what you think about other kids of this upcoming generation taking such overt cues from the 90s

 which ones? So much of that shit going on I find it hard to sift through to be honest. And I skip over a lot of it. I'm about to check out the Joey Badass thing that came out today. Not a big fan of most NYC golden era knockoffs though. I'd much rather listen to someone like Ka or Roc Marci, who actually lived through the era and have the enlightenment and wisdom of 40 year old as opposed to 17 year olds.

In general what appeals to me about Raider Klan is not the nostalgic element, but their selection of unusual source material, and the choice of imagery and production techniques employed mainly by SGP, but also by other Klan members in pockets. Just a more interesting approach to me, and more novel.

Not really interested in someone trying to recapture the vibe of Native Tongues or Wu-Tang or Boot Camp Clik too much... people have been trying to do that for 15 years now. Including Native Tongues members, Wu-Tang, and Boot Camp Clik.

Or are you talking about other southern/regional revivalists? I've heard some stuff, but not a ton.

Also - I took a cue from your suggested edit. Thanks for the input.

Yeah - Tried to listen to the Joey Bada$$ mixtape today. Couldn't make it past the first few songs before going back to Troy Ave. I guess I feel like it's nice stuff like that is out there for kids these days, but I'll pass.

Caught Spaceghost's show at S.O.B.s last night. Aside from the venue's staff not knowing how to handle the crowd outside the building and forcing hundreds of people to wait in the pouring rain regardless of whether they had tickets or not, it was a great time.

Despot opened. Kids seemed like they weren't feeling him at first, but after a while he won them over. He brought out eXquire for the track the two of them did over a Spaceghostpurrp beat. I wish that shit was online. Need it.

Anyway, Spaceghost killed shit. Even though he was on stage with literally 100 people and rapped over his own vocal tracks, he still commanded excellent mic and stage presence. At first it was bugged because the crowd on stage was more hyped than the actual crowd itself, but things soon evened out. He opened with The Black God and closed with Suck a Dick 2011 I think. Other songs he did include Been Fweago, Don't Give A Damn, Grind on Me, Get Yah Head Bust, Elevate and a few others I can't remember. The kid's a beast.

Really enjoyed that write up. Theres so much going on with Klan biz that its hard to explain things in a way to someone who could potentially become a fan without sounding like your making it all up. I might even email the review to people who need a study guide the next time I decide its a good idea to show someone this crew.

The Raiderz are pretty much my favorite thing going on with rap today. SGP is one of the main reasons for me checking out new music with an open mind. Love the versatility.
