For what it's worth, I have never made any mention of anything to do with the general quality of Canadian rap. That's because I know next to nothing about it.
Right today, KA is a better writer, more focused artist and all around more original rapper than Saigon.
NY has a lot of dope artists today, you are either unaware of them or unable to appreciate what they are doing vs. what you "expect from new york". People rap all over the place, not just in the Bronx. It's never going to be '89 again and really, why would anyone need it to be. As far as mainstream, expecting New York to dominate that market in 2012 is asinine. You might as well ask why MTV doesn't have Rap City or Beavis & Butthead anymore. The answers are so varied and obvious that the question is just silly.
As for indie rap, there's a bunch of talent in the tristate, if you actually want to check for it and not just reminisce about Joell Ortiz in 2009.
hey, Toronto is New York's little brother, so if there is anything going on in NYC worth hearing, I want to hear it.
that being said, I haven't heard any new MC since KA to really make me say "I'm going to follow your career". Seriously, list me any new rappers on your radar, and I'll check for them. Sure times change and rap evolves and nobody should expect a 1994 roster of rappers in 2012.
But still: it's not really about "dominating the market" or not, it's about a certain type of tradition dying, or going thru a major transition. New York City is the MECCA OF HIP HOP on planet earth. It losing its dominant position in the sound and shape and direction of hip hop, both independently and industry wise, is noteworthy. And somewhat inevitable to a degree, I suppose, but still. It's certainly one of the reasons hip hop sucks ass right now.
people can't pretend that capitalism and commercialism hasn't STRANGLED THE FUCK out of New York City rap culture, and that MANY new rappers coming up now must say to themselves: "I have to sound like what is popular for me to even have a chance to get played on the radio or even listened to then rejected by a label, fuck trying to innovate or change the game. I just want to get IN the game, and I'll bite Kanye West, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne or whoever's hot this week if I have to." I listen to the occasional new song from random cats, and I am now an Def Jam A&R instead of a music appreciator, as in: I'll turn that shit OFF in 45 seconds if it's ANOTHER cliche ass, shallow ass, ignorant ass ode to ghetto bullshit and street violence or hustling or sex. You know LOTS of rap coming out nowadays (from NYC and beyond, I admit) is just simply HOT GARBAGE.
I will agree that KA is more original than Saigon is... but both of them rap circles around that Ghostface clone Action Bronson. Yeah, he really seems like a nice guy, his beard is red so he is in the Freeway/Stalley hirstute hiffop! cool guy club, and he's white so he gets extra hipster/internet cool points for imitating a Black legend from Staten Island. But still: Action Bronson is a style biter, and Rakim wrote the rules about that shit on a sign that is still hanging by the door.
