YouTube Appreciation/Classic Wu Shit pt. 2

Ok Class, you have an assignment today.

First, you're going to need about two hours of free time and a bag of this:

Image hosting by Photobucket

Next, you're going to have to sit in your most comfortable seat and smoke that shit. All of it!

Now you should be moderatly stoned. Enjoy the following:

Protect Ya Neck

Wu Tang Clan Ain't Nothin' To Fuck With

The Mystery of Chessboxing

M.E.T.H.O.D. Man

In case you guys don't get the point... last night I discovered the virtues of YouTube. I smoked a ton of weed and watched classic rap videos until 2 am, which is quite late for me given that I rise from my bed before 5 every morning. This shit is the motz and every two weeks or so I'm going to do a thread like this.

I picked Wu Tang Clan videos because the oldest ones are my absolute favorites. There was nothing doper to me as a youngin' than watching a bunch of dudes rap with masks on because they had warrants. Fuck computer effects, I want heads with gats, big knives, timbs, and hoddies repping it... that's that street shit. It reminded me of the time my best friend was taken out of school in handcuffs for bringing two shottys to his 9th Grade semi-formal. The shit was all over the news and he was on TV with a black box over his face- imortalized in anonymity and a martyr for the foulness we grew up in- just like our hero, Image hosting by Photobucket.

WE LIVE THIS SHIT!

DIE!

Rare Gore Shit

My favorite rapper? When I listen to him rap I always remind myself that he should be. Gore is obscure, he has a great vocabulary and makes great word choices for his rhymes, and his recent obsession with the studio punch-in belies the fact that all of his early work displayed his complete mastery of cadence and flow.

Today I threw together a bunch of rare and obscure Goretex shit. I don't think any of this is from the Cannoe Head joint and unless you are a poster at NecroHipHop.com you haven't heard much of this stuff.

1.) Revolutionize

An original Necro production used by Non Phixion to freestyle over at their first appearance on radio as a group (WKCR). The beat is super dope and in 1994 when this came out one might mistake it for a Pete Rock track.

Gore's verse is last but it is easily the best out of the bunch. Everyone reps hard but Gore just came right the fuck out of left field and dropped this gem.

2.) Retaliation

200? track done with a Sweedish rapper named Greise. Gore reps last again and sets it off properly:

"Catch a fractured head; the one who leaves actresses dead/ I ain't a even rapper, just a canibal that ain't been captured yet."

SICK!

3.) Non Phixion Freestyle Over The Triumph Beat

Yeah, some of these verses you've probobaly heard before but Gore and Ill Bill spit two super vicious verses that aren't on any of their other freestyles or songs. The sound quality is less than perfect but this is a joint even the die-hard Non Phixion fans haven't heard yet.

4.) Goretex- Hated Remix

Jigsaw did an alternate version of this. From what I understand Jig is no longer down with NP or PL.

No one noticed.

5.) Woody Allen Verse

Just an obscure verse from an old NP freestyle that has yet to hit the net in full length quality.

6.) Bad Spit ft. Goretex- Demonic Devise

Scanandavian MC with a Gore spot. This is only a few weeks old. Gore goes off the deep-end with this verse, probably the most scum-bag verse of his that I've ever heard.

7.) Non Phixion Freestyle

This only exists in accapella version I believe and someone from the Necro board put some of his beats to it. Not bad.

8.) Unknown Source

Obscure Gore verse from an unknown radio program, sometime in the mid-90s.

Rare Goretex Shit

PS.

It's off topic but... for the record I want to add that MF Grimm's dis to MF Doom is without a doubt the best dis track in the last 10 years. Maybe because it isn't much of a dis so much as the perfect way to pull someone's card. I've been hearing a lot of rumors in the underground about how shady Doom has become, rumors I've been hearing as early as 1999. This song is intensely personal yet everything that hip hop and the code of the streets truly embodies. If you haven't heard if yet I suggest you go hunt it down.

Tribute to Jersey pt. 2

"They call me Hussien, Fatal/ It's a two-game table/ I'm rockin' ya nigga's craddle with a knife in your navel..."

The first time I heard of Fatal Hussien he was killing shit with Tupac. Fuck, to be honest with you I never liked 'Pac that much so when I heard my man's 'Pac tape I went out and bought a copy just to hear this Fatal guy.

For those who don't know Fatal Hussien he is a former member of the Outlawz and hails from Montclair, New Jersey. I think he or Kadafi was Tupac's godson as well. Fatal has an effortless flow and is a very good writer. He killed the "Made Niggaz" track something SERIOUS too, murdering one of my favorite beats of all time.

Anyway, I feel that Fatal is highly slept on as an MC because everyone associates him with Tupac and figures he was one of his lackeys. That's far from the case. I think the real reason for Fatal not being well known is his lack of roots in a particular area and his favorite mistress is a beast of a broad known as incarseration. His first album, In the Line of Fire, has a heavy West Coast vibe and features a lot of West Coast artists (as well as East Coast heavyweights like Freddy Foxx and Tame One). His second album came out on Rap-a-Lot, a label based out of Houston, and I haven't heard it but I was told it had the typical Rap-a-Lot sound (which is no insult, just proof that Fatal doesn't have his own sound). His next album is due out on Murda Inc. This lack of consistency is why I feel that Fatal stays under the radar. There is no particular sound that Fatal can call his own. Some would call this a curse, I think it displays his dexterity as a rapper.

One of the peculiarities of Fatal's first solo is the fact that there are a lot of uncredited features. Some claim New Jersey, others shout out the Bay Area. On the track "Friday" some nameless MC shouts out "Killa Black" which was the name of Havoc's (of Mobb Deep) brother who died in a car accident a few months before Fatal's album dropped. I don't know if this was some kind of cheap-shot because 'Pac and the Mobb had beef at the time, but there are a lot of unanswered questions about the references on this album and why the MCs remain nameless. It's a shame, these guys are dope on the mic.

As far as what is up with Fatal now, who knows. Rumor has it he had a falling out with Pac after he crashed his car, then he left the Outlawz, then he spent three years in prison for slashing someone's face with a boxcutter and then stabbing that person in the stomach and intestines (gives a whole new meaning to that "knife in your navel" line I quoted above). He is all over Ja Rule's latest album and he dissed 50 Cent a few times on there as well. I also heard he has a "Fatalveli" mixtape out but I don't know the first thing about it or where to buy it for that matter. I was also told he does work with Jim Jones of the Dipset crew as well but I can't say I'm a fan of Jim Jones really.

Today I present to all of you two archives for download. The first is Fatal's first LP, In the Line of Fire, which features Tame One, Freddy Foxx, Mac Mall, and some other uncredited West Coast rhymers who are quite nice with it. The second file is a little compilation of rare and unreleased shit as well as some guest spots. A lot of this shit is exclusive and you won't find it outside of my blog.

In The Line of Fire

Fatal Hussien Rarities and Guest Spots

So what's next for the last installment of Jersey's Finest? I'm not going to tell you now but just know that I am in the process of collecting 12-15 rare/unreleased tracks by this crew plus videos and a few full albums. Stay tuned because it'll be here next week.

Vinyl Oddities pt. 2

Back with part two in my three part series about the strange world of vinyl. My first entry for today should look familiar to most of you:

Image hosting by Photobucket

What shouldn't look familiar to you is the b-side. If you own the record you know that the song The Real Weight is the b-side. My copy, the test pressing, is for Jehroo's (Jeru) "bichez."

I found the difference in song and strange spelling for Jeru, who had two classic albums to his credit by the time in his career, to be quite bizzare.

One of my favorite 12's from 2003 was Chuggo's No Gentleman/schoolyard bullies record. One of the things I like about his music is that he and his cousin Timmy 2gats have this voice-over guy that hypes them up on their records. I first heard him on his diss to Bishop and then on this 12'. They put an extra track onto this 12 with clips of the guy so that djs can use them in remixs of their own. I thought this was clever advirtisement on their part- listening to a Choclair song and hearing some dj scratch in a "Chuggo" or moaning woman for shits and grins.

Image hosting by Photobucket

Oh, if you don't have the 12' I want you to know that Pumpkinhead absolutly killed his guest verse on Schoolyard Bullies. Chuggo bodied it too but it's my favorite Pumpkinhead verse. Immortal Technique, Brooklyn Akademy, and the usual cast of Lakeshore criminals make appearances on Chuggo's debut Act Like You Know.

The first rare record I found was Ill Advised Through The Eye/ Kwestions/ Against the Grain 12'. It came out on Quake City records. It's a rather obscure record of a group very few people outside of Philly are aware about (or care about for that matter). The first copy I bought of it came from England. It's label is black and white, well black and off-white really. Anyway, it appears that there are two seperate pressings because a copy spotted in a Japanese record shop is a light rainbow back ground instead of and off white back ground. I wonder if the song's are any different?

And what the fuck is up with errors on records? Both of my copies of Baron Ricks "Harlem River Drive" 12's have the labels flip-flopped. Dj Honda's "We Don't Play" 12' says it has the track "Foundation" on the B-Side but it's not there even though his name is is big blue letters on the cover. Oh, gotta love the first batch of Necro's "Most Sadistic" 12', the b-side on that was "I Need Drugs" as opposed to the proper tracks for the release: "Your Fuckin' Head Split" and "You're Dead." Speaking of Necro and vinyl, will we ever see the 12's for Dopesick and Our Life?

Image hosting by Photobucket

Image hosting by Photobucket

The records are all pressed and have been sitting in the PLR offices since 2001 when the songs were recorded. We eventually got the songs on Brutality pt. 1 but having them on vinyl with acapellas and instrumentals for mixing and blending would have been dope in 2001 when Necro didn't have any instrumentals out. I especially want to have that Dopesick 12' for the sick cover art alone. Does anyone have a high quality picture of this cover? I'd love to have that mailed to me as a file.

What's next for part three? A little Jay-Z, some Norwegian shit, and more. Stay tuned.
Tribute to Jersey pt. 1

When most people think of New Jersey they think of Guidos from the Shore, the Sopranos, homosexualty in the Governor's mansion, and the Turnpike. If you've lived here you'd know that New Jerz is also home to a lot of life's finer things: easy women and dope hip hop.

From the mid-80s to the present day NJ has been a hotbed for hip hop tallent. There are a lot of dope scenes out here. Trenton was making a lot of noise in the last 80s and early 90s, Joe Buddens is holding it down, Eminem came here to rock with the Outsidaz, Canibus grew up here, and Jus Allah reps the most dangerous city in America- Camden (the city where I teach high school).

One of my favorite clicks in New Jersey is PPP. What a lot of people don't know is that PPP is the Pistol Poppin' Posse. Hailing from Newark they opperated much like any other street gang and unique to them (MFC aside) is the fact that certain members of PPP rapped but most were thugs and street cats getting paid the illegit way.

In 2000 I left NJ to go to school in Delaware. It was there that I met a member of PPP whose name I can't mention for a number of legal reasons. He had warrants back home and his cousin set him up with a job cutting hair in Dover.

For those that don't know, PPP is who Redman, Tame One, and most of the original Outsidaz run with. A lot of them are family members. Redman and Tame One are first cousins and on the other side of the family bloodline is Pace Won. For today's update I uploaded the aptly titled Family Day. Our nameless friend hooked me up with the vinyl after I recognized his tattoo- a bottle of champaign with PPP written in script on the label. Let's put it this way, if you are a street cat in Jersey you know what the fuck that tattoo means. PPP is big in Newark, they move a lot of shit from shottys to blow. Shit is very real. Real recognized real and then shit was on an poppin'. A few days later we were taking some L's to the head like "aaaahhhhh" and money pulled out one of these:

Image hosting by Photobucket

Family Day is a dope concept. Govna Mattic, who a lot of people might remember from the Ghetto Red Hot 12' with Diesel Don and Redman (the cover had the three men breaking up a few pounds of trees, weighing, and bagging up in front of a map of the world) is one of Redman's lesser-known cousins and obviously his rap career is a hobby. He got Red, Tame, Pace, Roz (Red's baby sister), and Young Zee to contribute to the song. The beat is slow and reminds the listener of a slow, lazy summer afternoon complete with BBQ and fat bags of trees. It was originally from Govna's album Hell Up In Newark but the track was pressed on a limited amount of vinyl (two pressings, maybe 300 copies total) and sold hand to hand in 1997. The song wouldn't appear again until Govna's album came out in 1999 and was also sold hand to hand. If anyone was wondering why a track with so many heavyweights would go unoticed now you know why: zero distribution.

As for the album- it's not bad at all and it has a lot of nice tracks. I intended to only upload one track today but in case anyone is interested Govna Mattic's full length I've uploaded that as well. You can find that motherfucker right here.

Interesting fact: my nameless friend is a member of the now-defunct Outsidaz. He ghost wrote a lot of verses for other rappers from NYC and people signed to Ruff House Records at the time but we won't go there because I don't think any of it was released.

Giving it up for Mista Sinista...

The year was 1994 and I just copped the new album from Common Sense. I put the tape in the deck and cranked up the volume a couple of notches. After a few seconds of hiss the notes of light piano strings began to trickle on my ears with the comfort of warm summer rain. All of the sudden a new noise commanded my attention- deft scratching by who I would later learn is one of the best djs to ever do it: Mista Sinista.

In my estimation Mista Sinista is one of the best djs to ever stand behind the 1's and 2's but people sleep on him behind the boards. Maybe it is because Sinista's production credits are very few in number. He also works with relatively unknown artists. Today I'd like to introduce you to some of Sinista's work as a producer.

Cliffhangaz- Ready 4 War/Chicken Curry Head 12'

This is one of my favorite 12's to come out of the golden era of indie hip hop in NYC. I don't have any idea who these guys are but this 12' is super nice. The beats are airy and breeze through the speakers lightly. The MCs are dope too. I like Sinista's use of the comedian for a vocal sample on Chicken Curry Head as well. Ready 4 War is a bit darker but still easy on the ears. If you can pick this 12' up I suggest it. I bought my copy at Fat Beats when it dropped and then copped a double in Austria for 2 Euros in 2002.

Chicken Curry Head

Ready 4 War

Kukoo Da Baga Bonez- Padded Cells

The first track on side B of the vinyl is the only cut Mista Sinista produced on the album and it sure is a banger. A lot of crate diggers in NYC might know who Kukoo is, he put out up to 10 singles in the 90s and once in a while his name pops up on blogs related to digging but a lot of people never heard of this EP. It came out in 2001 on Analysis Records (A Czech label focused on house/dance music, I think) and the name is actually Insane Psycho Home feature in Kukoo da Baga Bonez and World (World is Kukoo's little brother I believe).

The track itself is quite dope and has that gritty, dreary sound of late 90's hip hop.

And of course there is always the landmark lp by Mista Sinista's old group the X-ecutioners called X-pressions. True to form, Sinista works with unknown MCs and heavily featured on this LP are the E Brothers, who I believe were first introduced to the hip hop world on the New Jersey Drive Soundtrack. It's quite hard to say for sure what Sinista's contributions to the LP are because some production credits read "produced by the X-ecutioners" and others divie up the contributions between who did the drums, who did the scratches, and who mixed the track and all of the mumbo-jumbo. Regardless, this album is very important to hip hop because it may have been the first major-label release (there were always mad tapes from DJ crews as far back as the mid-80's but this was one of the first to be released on a large scale) that focused strictly on the dj and his contributions to hip hop. Just so you kids know, the first hip hop producers were all DJs who found dope breaks and looped them for the breakers at block parties and that word to Kool Herc.

Peep the album here:
X-ecutioners- X-pressions

In summary I am curious as to what else Sinista has produced. If anyone reading this knowns what's really good on that tip please shoot me a line so I can do a follow-up on this in the future.

Vinyl Oddities... Part One of Three.

Through my years of collecting rare hip hop shit I've uncovered some really cool stuff. One thing that I find interest in is the details about obscure stuff and what makes it different from anything else.

Today I'd like to talk about something I find dope... un-noticed details of records.

1.) Baby J ft. A-alikes "Walk With A Bop."

I obtained this 12' as a promo in 1998 I think. It's one of my favorite songs to this day. Anyway, the dirty and clean versions of the song start off with the chorus. The accapella starts off with the two rappers having a conversation related to the song's theme and then jumps right into the chorus. I find it very strange but also quite enjoyable. I wish I knew how to produce beats because I'd use that to remix the track and add something new to the original.

2.) RA the Rugged Man- ????

I really don't know what to call this single. It's just too different in form and too unorganized to go un-noticed. For starters they stole the Radio Shack Logo and used that for their logo.

Side A reads: R.A. The RuggedMan and Akinyele in this terribly goofy, 50's Movie Horror Font. Then underneath that is says "What the..." and the track sequence: Radio Mix, Original Dirty, Inst.

So far it looks normal (somewhat).

Side B reads: R.A. the RuggedMan Classics
{Never on wax before!)
Stanley Kubrick
1- Dirty
2- Clean
3- Inst.

Ok, so this is totally different from the back as most 12's follow the same sequence on each side and stick with the same wording (Radio on one side, Clean on the other).

But this is what gets me, it was released by Robbins Entertainment and was distributed by BMG.

BMG? That's fucking major, and at the time RA was signed to Priority (which was also big at the time). They stole the Radio Shack logo and put out this single? That's kinda foul in the business world.

There is more to the story than that though, the label number is RA-222 the phone number has a 516 area code. That's Suffolk County, where RA is from. I called it when I got the record in 1999, trying to get out on their mailing list. It was a fucking pager number.

So quite frankly, I don't know what to make of this record. I think it is the only place to get RA's criminally slept-on "Stanley Kubrick" joint without the mixing that is on the CD release. RA tells a lot of stories about pimping record labels for money and not putting out any music. Could this be proof of one of his stunts? Everyone and their brother knows that RA bootlegged his own Jive release Night of the Bloody Apes when he got dropped and the tape that was made into mp3 for the internet came from a tape dub that RA provided someone, right?

3.) Group Home- Dial a Thug/12 O'Clock BKLYN /Breaker 1,9

First of all, this is one of the best produced 12' of the late 90's and in my opinion is every bit as dope as the stuff Group Home did with Premier. The album was a different story but Lil’ Dap and Malachi did the right thing by putting the best tracks from the forthcoming LP on this single because they didn't keep this vibe up enough (though it was still a better album than I feel most people gave it credit for).

Anyway, the record label stamp reads:

Unauthorized duplication of this recording is applicable to laws and subject to beat down.

In 1998 I felt that made the record just that much more dope and I still feel that way today. Unless you looked for it you wouldn't notice it. I like those subtle little touches of thuggery.

I'm leaving on a jet plane...

Well, Mos Def didn't leave on a jet plane but if anyone here has heard "The New Danger" then you'd know something left on that plane, most likely his heart. The new music is mostly unlistenable, but I digress.

In 1998 DJ Honda dropped HII and the following year he released Mos Def's song "Travelin' Man" as a single. A lot of people might remember the remix to the song, which got a lot of rotation as college radio began to decline. Anyway, on the CD single there were two versions of the song: the "remix" and the "main" version. Here is where the controversey starts as the "main" is slightly different than the LP version. Most people bought the single for the remix and never gave the other tracks a second thought, myself included. One day when I was 18, after owning the CD for more than two years, my girl and I went for a drive to smoke some weed and I popped the cd in, hoping to cruise to Honda's laid-back production. I went to mouth some of the lyrics along with Mos and I didn't get the words right. It was kinda embarassing. I was high as fuck but I knew that something was different. My girl was laughing at me, but when we got home I pulled out my H2 LP and found out for myself: the two songs were in fact different- different hook and different mix essentially- and I felt an odd combination of vindication (because I was right) and excitement (because I found some rare shit by accident).

Here are all three versions of the song for you guys:

Scene Check

Today I am going to look as some of the rising stars in underground hip hop coming out of Toronto and Chicago.

Toronto

Last week I brought up the Arkeologists, a production crew out of Toronto. Aside from the aforementioned Chuggo the Arkeologists did all of the production for Poor Man Militia. The subjects that PMM rap about are much different than what Chuggo focuses on. While Chuggs is bragging about how much pussy he gets and how comfortable he feels in a jail cell, PMM are a lot more conscious in a Wu Tang kind of way. There are reference to crime but their are just as many references to the despair that nessestiates crime. There is also a touch of the island influence that we saw in Wyclef in his solo debut The Carnival in one of the MCs and in the beats.

Highlights of this album are "Robbery," "Stay Calm," "Still Thinkin'," "Victims," "Richman/Poorman," and "Newspaper Nap."

Chicago

Does anyone here remember Prime? At one point he ran with the Molemen. After parting ways with them he started his own collective known as "Middle Ground." So far they have not released any music but I was given a CD last year full of all the shit they've done so far. When I got this CD I knew that none of this shit was commercially available so I'm not too sure how much of this shit is out there now but here are 13 tracks and one music video by Prime's new team. My favorite track is the one featured in the video and if anyone could rip that into mp3 for me that'd be fresh.

If anyone has full albums from crew from around their way and you feel that they deserve a bit more shine than they are getting now please send mp3s my way at mustafagoodprose at g mail dot com.

Peace,

MGP
