Vinyl Oddities pt. 2

Back with part two in my three part series about the strange world of vinyl. My first entry for today should look familiar to most of you:

What shouldn't look familiar to you is the b-side. If you own the record you know that the song The Real Weight is the b-side. My copy, the test pressing, is for Jehroo's (Jeru) "bichez."

I found the difference in song and strange spelling for Jeru, who had two classic albums to his credit by the time in his career, to be quite bizzare.

One of my favorite 12's from 2003 was Chuggo's No Gentleman/schoolyard bullies record. One of the things I like about his music is that he and his cousin Timmy 2gats have this voice-over guy that hypes them up on their records. I first heard him on his diss to Bishop and then on this 12'. They put an extra track onto this 12 with clips of the guy so that djs can use them in remixs of their own. I thought this was clever advirtisement on their part- listening to a Choclair song and hearing some dj scratch in a "Chuggo" or moaning woman for shits and grins.

Oh, if you don't have the 12' I want you to know that Pumpkinhead absolutly killed his guest verse on Schoolyard Bullies. Chuggo bodied it too but it's my favorite Pumpkinhead verse. Immortal Technique, Brooklyn Akademy, and the usual cast of Lakeshore criminals make appearances on Chuggo's debut Act Like You Know.

The first rare record I found was Ill Advised Through The Eye/ Kwestions/ Against the Grain 12'. It came out on Quake City records. It's a rather obscure record of a group very few people outside of Philly are aware about (or care about for that matter). The first copy I bought of it came from England. It's label is black and white, well black and off-white really. Anyway, it appears that there are two seperate pressings because a copy spotted in a Japanese record shop is a light rainbow back ground instead of and off white back ground. I wonder if the song's are any different?

And what the fuck is up with errors on records? Both of my copies of Baron Ricks "Harlem River Drive" 12's have the labels flip-flopped. Dj Honda's "We Don't Play" 12' says it has the track "Foundation" on the B-Side but it's not there even though his name is is big blue letters on the cover. Oh, gotta love the first batch of Necro's "Most Sadistic" 12', the b-side on that was "I Need Drugs" as opposed to the proper tracks for the release: "Your Fuckin' Head Split" and "You're Dead." Speaking of Necro and vinyl, will we ever see the 12's for Dopesick and Our Life?

The records are all pressed and have been sitting in the PLR offices since 2001 when the songs were recorded. We eventually got the songs on Brutality pt. 1 but having them on vinyl with acapellas and instrumentals for mixing and blending would have been dope in 2001 when Necro didn't have any instrumentals out. I especially want to have that Dopesick 12' for the sick cover art alone. Does anyone have a high quality picture of this cover? I'd love to have that mailed to me as a file.

What's next for part three? A little Jay-Z, some Norwegian shit, and more. Stay tuned.
