“CL having the same album title as mine…what are the odds”
Interview By: Nygh

PHILAFLAVA: What would you want someone to know about your music that has never heard of you before?

ACCESS IMMORTAL: That it doesn't sound anything like the usual music they call hip hop or rap and if you give it a chance you’re going to hear something different from the norm.

PHILAFLAVA: Could you explain any further? Do you mean your music has influences from other genres?

ACCESS IMMORTAL: Well, I listen to a lot of different music outside of hip hop. I appreciate anything that sounds good so I’m sure it may influence the way I do Hiphop because every form of music crafts their songs in different ways and having all of that around me influences the way I make my own music

PHILAFLAVA: What’s the most embarrassing moment you ever experienced?

ACCESS IMMORTAL: I’m not even sure. I don't think I’ve have many of those but I would guess it be just grinding in the music game and rockin’ at shows where there are barely people there sometimes.

PHILAFLAVA: Whoa, I would have thought your shows sell out on the regular.

ACCESS IMMORTAL: Haha, I wish they would but sometimes even the best artist won't pull a sell out show without the right promotion behind it; letting people know about it.

PHILAFLAVA: How does a song begin for you? Do you write to beats or write first, pick the beat later?

ACCESS IMMORTAL: I usually hear the beat and just listen to it at random and let ideas come to me. I don't force anything that doesn't come to me naturally.

PHILAFLAVA: You’ve been compared to a young Nas in his prime. Got any comments about that?

ACCESS IMMORTAL: Nas is my favorite MC of all time so I appreciate the comparison for sure. I’ve always been a fan of how he is with the words and stories he tells and even though he may not always sell like other rappers. He always had the respect from him just being nice with it [and] being his own person.

PHILAFLAVA: Yea, Nas definitely always comes through as one of the most realest MCs. Never really sugar coated things, and you can always tell his albums are what he wants them to be.

PHILAFLAVA: Do you think Hiphop is dead, though?

ACCESS IMMORTAL: Not dead, but the idea behind what it should be seems like it's dead because all the executives try to tell the artist what's good music and what's not; and how to connect with people even though they don't do music themselves. A lot of labels have people thinking a degree in music means you know more about making good music and what it sound s like than any fan or artist could ever know.

PHILAFLAVA: If you were the boss of Hiphop, who would you fire and who would get a promotion? Let’s include record execs and artists, just to go with what you just said about record labels.

ACCESS IMMORTAL: Really good question, I can't even answer that right now. I’d have to take some time to think on it, but I’d definitely fire an exec who signs artist based on [which] region you might be from or having one good song but no longevity past a catchy single.

PHILAFLAVA: If you hadn’t gone into rap, what do you think you would be doing now?

ACCESS IMMORTAL: Probably writing for a magazine having to do with music, but I’m sure it would be music related; more then likely hip hop related even if I wasn't the actual artist.
PHILAFLAVA: Whats up with you and CL Smooth having the same album title, “American Me”?

ACCESS IMMOTRAL: Pure coincidence, haha. When I was almost ready to put out mine last year, I remember somebody hit me up about CL having the same album title as mine and I was like damn, what are the odds of that happening.

PHILAFLAVA: Well what does the album title mean for you?

ACCESS IMMORTAL: To me it represents myself being an American and being who I am because of my environment and how I was brought up. Everyone in the world sees other cultures and countries through their own eyes and this is just me showing people how I see things from my side; being black and American.

PHILAFLAVA: Whats your most anticipated release for '07?

ACCESS IMMORTAL: My boy Karniege's album, Medinah Starr's album, the new 50 cause I like him despite what people say about him all the time, and the new Slim Thug and Chamillionaire albums. Besides that I can't think of a lot I’m really anticipating too much that I know is coming this year.

PHILAFLAVA: What about Cannibal Ox? Aren't they droppin’ this year?

ACCESS IMMORTAL: I’m not sure, I haven't spoke to Vast or Vordul in a minute, so I dunno if that's still coming this year. I hope so, [and] if it is, I want to hear that one as well.

PHILAFLAVA: What’s up with the PCF fam?

ACCESS IMMORTAL: Not much right now. Everybody just does their own thing at the moment. I’m not sure if there will ever be a collective project between everyone, just solo projects.

PHILAFLAVA: PS3 or Wii?

ACCESS IMMORTAL: Wii at the moment, especially for the older games and innovation. PS3 later, once the big hits come out.

PHILAFLAVA: What’s your favorite part of the chicken?

ACCESS IMMORTAL: Leg probably, unless it's from the Chinese spot, then its the wing.

PHILAFLAVA: Is there anything else you want the good people of Philaflava to know about what the expect from Access in 2007?

ACCESS IMMORTAL: I hope to make a bigger impact in hip hop then [my last album], and that this 2nd album means a lot to me. When it drops this Spring, I want people to pick it up and see the progression from then till now.
